Welcome to my website, internet users! It seems that I've started myself a blog here, and I think I at least owe all of you out there a little introduction. You did somehow find your way to my blog, afterall. It's funny, really. Unless you know me, there's probably no reason you should even be reading this. I'm not anyone famous, and I am not leaking all the latest albums from your favorite artists to you. But that will not stop me from addressing each and every one of these entries to the internet as a whole. Because, frankly, I have a lot of respect for anyone taking the time to read what I have to say. So I'm getting off track. You'll see a lot of that in my entries to come. Anyway, on to introductions.
I'm Greg, and for the next couple of months I'll be a student at Western Connecticut State University. After that, I'll be a productive (I may be jumping the gun) member of society. I'm 22 years old, and have been for about 9 months so far. I have been figuring since I'm this old already, I must have enough stories and opinions to keep this blog going forever if I need to. Of course, that could all be delusions of grandeur. But I won't be able to tell that until the fateful day that I come to this blog and have absolutely nothing to say. Anyway, I've been playing in bands for a good chunk of my life, and continue to do so to this day. I'll go over each and every one of those in greater detail later on in the post. I have had one job in my life, and am currently unemployed. But hey! I'm still a student. I can get away with that for the next two and a half months before I graduate. I enjoy reading quite a bit. And related to that, I also like to write. If I didn't like to write, I probably wouldn't be doing this right now. As you might be realizing, I'm really not too comfortable with describing myself in such a general way. But you get the idea. I'm a son, a brother, a student, unemployed, a musician, a music lover, a reader, a writer, a blogger, and about a million other things. I'm sure you'll learn a lot more about me if you continue to read this blog.
A big part of my life has always been music. When I was very young I would be happy just listening to Michael Jackson and Beatles records. In the second grade I picked up the saxophone, and played that for a few years, before giving up on nerdy band instruments. But I could play Ode To Joy faster than any of the other kids in the band. That wasn't the point, but fuck you! But yeah, as I grew up, my tastes changed. I went through my pop phase, my mall metal phase. I did it all. But of course, what really stuck was punk. I remember I was a late bloomer when it came to getting into punk. Hell, I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through eighth grade! Leave me alone! But once I hit high school, it was all over. And like any self-respecting punk rocker I got into punk through ska. But who cares about what music I like. Let's talk about all of the bands I've been in!
The first band I was ever in was Project Dropoff. I was approached by my friend Christian one day, and he told me one of his friends from marching band wanted to get a band together to play for the school's talent show. Now I had been playing bass for around a year by then, and had never been in a band. So I was pretty excited, and of course, agreed. We were going to play Otherside by Red Hot Chili Peppers for the talent show, and let me tell you, we worked on that song for weeks. We got it down pat and we sounded great. Or what I assumed was great. I don't know. I thought all of my bands sounded great at one point. But anyway, the day of the tryouts for the talent show came, and we were practicing beforehand, and the singer of the group, my friend Eric says "Guys, let's do Smells Like Teen Spirit." So being that we were all in our first band, and just wanted to play, we were totally stoked on that idea. So we practiced that song maybe a couple times, and then headed over to try out for a spot on the talent show. Well... We blew it. We played Smells Like Teen Spirit worse than Kurt Cobain would play it now. And he doesn't even have a head. Yeah, that's right. We were that bad. So we didn't get on the talent show, and Project Dropoff never played again. I've only ever played one school talent show in my life, in fact. I have no idea what the name of the band was, but we did a shitty dance cover of Sweet Child O Mine, and it was the pits.
You know what? I spent way too much time writing about some terrible talent show faux-band I was in that never actually played too an audience. There is no way that I am going to write about the rest of my more real bands tonight. Hell, I might not even go over any of my other bands now. I'll be damned if I am going to proofread any of this, but as I was writing it I wasn't feeling the same flow I normally have when writing. I'll chalk it up to first blog jitters. But this whole band theme might not be going anywhere. I don't know. We'll see how I feel about telling you all my embarrassing stories of being in bad bands tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll have something I'd rather talk about tomorrow. Something the rest of you guys can get into. Heh. What a way to introduce myself to the blogging community. I'm crashing before I even put the key in the ignition. (That's an idea! I'll tell you all about my car crashing story tomorrow! That'll draw you in for sure!) Until tomorrow, kids!
